and will remain at the museum until May 11, 2008. A VIP reception and lecture will open the exhibit on the evening of April 2.
The event is open to members of the press.
Our Lady of Light is painted in the neo-classical style and pictures the Virgin Mary with the infant Jesus, surrounded by angels.
In December 2004, it received the apostolic blessing of Pope John Paul II. The original painting has been on exhibit around the United States,
including the National Shrine in Washington, DC, the Dallas Women's Museum, and the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center. The oil on canvas Our Lady of Light was painted by Russian artist Natalia Tsarkova. Ms. Tsarkova is the first women to graduate from the Moscow Academy of the Fine Arts. The first woman to be the official portrait painter for a Pope, 39-year-old Russian Orthodox Tsarkova is gifted with a unique expressive ability that has won her the praise of Europe's royal and political elite. Her many portraits and painting in figurative naturalism have been commissioned by European nobility and royalty, cardinals, and museums. She has painted the only official portraits of Pope John Paul I and Pope John Paul II, and on December 12, 2007 she presented the official portrait, commissioned by the Vatican Museum, of Pope Benedict XVI. The portraits are on display in the Vatican Museums in Rome. The painting was first brought to the US for the official United States unveiling in May of 2005 held in the United States Capitol building as a bi-partisan senate resolution to posthumously honor the 85th birthday of Pope John Paul II. Senator Sam Brownback (R-Kansas) and Former Secretary of Veterans Affairs, Jim Nicholson, unveiled the original work of art in the presence of many elected representatives, notable Catholics, and Bush administration officials during a reception in the Capitol. Notable of the original painting of Our Lady of Light s that when presented to Pope John Paul II in 2004, he requested that the painting be hung in his personal study during the Christmas season. The painting remained with him during this last Christmas of his life on earth, making it an important piece of history in the life of the late Pope.
