It was a successful year in 2008 when Pope Benedict XV visited New York and Washington, DC. We had commissioned the largest painting in the world of His Holiness by Fred Villanueva called “Pope Benedict XV in prayer with the Holy Theologians”. This painting was on exhibit at the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center on April 17th, 2008 and we were very proud that the Pope viewed the painting. Currently on view this Christmas is our show “International Holiday Traditions” at the Historical Society of Washington DC. This spring our board will be opening a sister museum called “The National Catholic Museum” in the local metro area. A gala fundraiser is planned for February.
"The Morsel" By Paul A. Gatto
Welcome to the National Museum of Catholic Art and History new website. In 1995, NMCAH was founded by Christina Cox at 645 Fifth Avenue in Olympic Towers and later moved to Rockefeller Center in 1996-97. In 1998, the Board of Trustees leased a former Catholic Elementary school in the historical Italian neighborhood of East Harlem. We were located next to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Shrine for 10 years and completed a $15 million dollar renovation with of 11 art galleries in 2001. In August 2007, we purchase the building from the NY Archdiocese and remain a private but public museum servicing schools in the tri-state area.
Our museum is best known for a beautiful collection of old masters including “The Betrayal of Christ” by Sir Anthony Van Dyck. The contemporary galleries have new permanent exhibition called “The Morsel “(Last Supper) by Paul A. Gatto, with other artists such as Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg and “ The famous Blue Madonna”. Our Catholic history galleries tell the story of the voyage of Christopher Columbus, the success of The Declaration of Independence in an 8ft oil painting by Russian-born portrait painter Victor Korolev and his other portrait of Archbishop John Carroll. We just acquired for the permanent collection a Life -Size Nativity from the Philippines. Come see our 11 galleries of art and artifacts. Our museum welcomes traveling exhibits and works on art on loan by private collectors.
